Admiral’s Adventures: A Visit to Starkey

admiral at StarkeyAdmiral Windwagon Smith XLII Mike Greene has been checking in to share his visits to local organizations with the Prairie Schooner Mates this spring:

Starkey Inc. was one of our stops on Civic Day. For those of you who don’t know, Starkey is a wonderful facility that provides employment to folks in our community who are developmentally challenged, allowing them the chance to do meaningful work and earn a paycheck.

A regular Civic Day stop for a number of years, Starkey is a place where two things always happen. First of all, the employees are so happy to see us! We are like long-lost friends who haven’t seen each other in years. They offer hugs and handshakes, and show us what they do, giving them an opportunity to take pride in their work.

Equally important is the opportunity for the Schoonies to experience a side of our society that most of them have not witnessed before. Every one of the Schooner Mates did an incredible job of befriending the employees, and each paid very close attention to the details of the employees’ work product.

Later in the day in a chat room that we share, one of our Schoonies said that our visits that day were a ‘Life changing experience for her’! We take for granted the gifts we have and can easily get frustrated with some pretty trivial things. All we have to do is look around us, and we can quickly find something that will put our troubles in perspective.

Button Up. Have a Blast!
